Wikipedia defines an artist as a person who makes and creates art as an occupation or a person whose trade or profession requires a knowledge of design, drawing and painting. As designers, we are all artists building a beautiful canvas in which our clients can thrive.

The multi-faceted talent that is so abundant within our design community is amazing. It is uplifting to see so many of our colleagues begin to paint and draw and it is wonderful to reference or obtain a fellow designer’s art for a project.

“Art in the Home” is an exhibit spearheaded by top designer Lisa Peck, held at Artistry in the Ines Greenberg Gallery at the Bloomington Art Center. The exhibit is comprised of five separate rooms decorated by local ASID interior designers who have used hand-crafted furniture and home accessories created by some of our regions’ most talented artisans. It’s a lovely representation of how art in the home can redefine a space. This exhibit runs now until April 13th. Designers and their clients will enjoy this exhibit.

A good designer knows how to transform a space so that it reflects the client’s vision and using the works of local artists can add an amazing dimension to any project. As your new President-Elect, one goal I plan to pursue is to find additional avenues that can help foster the use of local artists within our design community.

I propose we develop relationships with local non-profit charities, such as Habitat for Humanity, connecting artists and industry partners with projects and events so that we can raise the public’s awareness of the potential of art as a powerful resource that can help redefine interior and exterior spaces. Building connections, adding value, and showing that Art is for everyone.

I’m excited to be representing the ASID Minnesota chapter. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you might have for the upcoming term year.

All the best,

Jennifer Austin-McGrath, Allied ASID
