Project Statement

As we considered lighting for this kitchen, the importance of the central fixture to the overall design was undeniable. The new tented ceiling demanded something spectacular. We realized this was an opportunity to tie the entire design together while creating the crown jewel of the project.

The cherry cabinetry and millwork are echoed in the main body of the fixture, with the most beautiful figured pieces set aside for this application. Mother-of-pearl inlays further tie the chandelier to the surrounding cabinetry. This coordination is central to the design. Given precedent in the original parts of the house, unlacquered brass was selected for the metal brackets and carries through the rest of the lighting and hardware in the kitchen.

Functionally, the chandelier provides ambient light over the central table and surrounding circulation spaces from four blown glass shades. A small task light is directly located in the underside of the central hub. This light is controlled by a separate dimmer switch, providing the option of a central night light in the room.

William Morris famously said: ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’ Careful attention to details, materials, and functionality resulted in a fixture we feel accomplishes both.
